Former Supreme Court justice, professor
honored as Champions of Justice

The Mississippi Center for Justice honored two UM law alumni at the 2007 Annual Champions of Justice Dinner.

Hon. Reuben Anderson (JD 67) and law professor Deborah Bell (JD 79), director of the Housing Law Clinic, were named the 2007 Champions of Justice in October by the MCJ.

“I am so honored to be recognized by the Mississippi Center for Justice. In a few short years, the center has become a powerful force in the state. Their work to assist victims of Katrina has been nothing short of heroic,” said Bell. “It is also particularly meaningful to me because the center is also honoring former Supreme Court Justice Reuben Anderson, one of our law school’s most outstanding graduates.”

Anderson was the first African American to serve as a Mississippi Supreme Court justice. He has been a pioneering civil rights attorney and is currently a partner at Phelps Dunbar in Jackson.

The Oct. 12 dinner began with the organization’s weekend event, “Katrina Recovery: A Work Still in Progress.” The dinner also gave special recognition to the hundreds of lawyers and law students who provided legal assistance in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

MCJ has been actively involved in providing legal services for low-income survivors of Hurricane Katrina since October 2005, when it established its Katrina Recovery Office on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in Biloxi. The local staff, along with the efforts of legal and community partners, has taken a prominent role in coordinating national and regional efforts to rebuild more just and inclusive communities.

The Mississippi Center for Justice was founded in Jackson in June 2003. Its purpose is to provide Mississippi with a home-grown, nonprofit public interest law firm committed to advancing racial and economic justice. MCJ relies on private contributions of friends and supporters from outside and within the state.
