Tupelo Attorney Selected Law Alumnus of the Year

William P. "Pete" Mitchell ('37) of Tupelo has been chosen the 2002 Law Alumnus of the Year by The Law Alumni Chapter of The University of Mississippi Alumni Association. Mitchell is a member of the Mitchell, Voge, Corban & Morris law firm in Tupelo, where he has practiced since graduating from the UM Law School.

The honor "recognizes Mr. Mitchell's lifetime of support for the Law School," said Tim Walsh, associate director of alumni affairs.

Last year, Mitchell endowed a $1 million scholarship fund honoring his late wife, Mary Annis Clayton Mitchell. The William P. and Mary Annis Clayton Mitchell Scholarship in Law provides deserving law students with financial support, which Mitchell said was not available when he attended law school during the Depression. "The legal profession has been good to me, and I think our responsibility as members is to give back," he said at the time the gift was made.
