Smith, Galloway Lead Lamar Order

D. Briggs Smith ('66) of Batesville chairs the Lamar Order of the UM Alumni Association. Robert C. Galloway ('67) of Gulfport serves as vice chair. The two assumed their new posts in July at the annual dinner held during the Bar Convention.

Smith graduated from the UM Law School in 1966, after receiving his bachelor's degree in pharmacy at Ole Miss in 1962. He is a registered pharmacist and licensed attorney in Mississippi. He is admitted to practice in all Mississippi courts, including circuit, chancery, Court of Appeals, and Supreme Court; United States District Court in the Northern and Southern Districts of Mississippi; U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd and 5th circuits; U.S. Tax Court; and U.S. Supreme Court. He is a founding partner of the firm Smith, Phillips, Mitchell & Scott, with offices in Batesville and Hernando.

Galloway received a bachelor's degree at Ole Miss in 1964, followed by his law degree in 1967. He served active duty with the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969, including one year in Vietnam. He has since practiced law in Gulfport. A member of Butler, Snow, O'Mara, Stevens & Cannada, PLLC, he concentrates his practice in litigation, principally in the areas of product liability defense and commercial litigation.

Currently vice president of the Mississippi Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates, he is a past president of the Mississippi Bar Foundation, past chairman of the Mississippi Bar's Litigation and General Practice Section, and former chair and Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He also holds membership in the International Association of Defense Counsel, the Maritime Law Association of the United States, the American Health Lawyers Association, and the Defense Research Institute.
